Consciousness is subjective experience itself: the felt quality of seeing red or being in pain — what philosophers call Qualia. The "hard problem" is explaining why any physical process is accompanied by experience at all, and no reductive account has closed that gap.

Consciousness is a functional process: global availability of information to a system's reasoning, reporting, and action-selection mechanisms. On this view there is no further "hard problem" residue — a sufficiently integrated system, biological or artificial, is conscious, which is why the question matters for Artificial General Intelligence.
