Determinism is the claim that the complete state of the universe at one time, together with the laws of nature, fixes its state at every later time. Whether it is true is an open empirical question: classical mechanics is deterministic, while standard interpretations of quantum mechanics are not. Its truth or falsity is the hinge of most debates about Free Will.
